Katy Perry’s “Roar” single cover

Just when it seemed as though Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” was unstoppable, a certain pussycat ended its reign as she clawed her way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. That’s right, Katy Perry has ousted the top song of the summer from the chart summit with her latest hit, “Roar”, and ushered in the new fall season.

Following Perry’s performance of the song at the 2013 MTV VMA, “Roar” sold a stunning 448,000 downloads during the last week (up 14%). The record also garnered over 97 million audience impressions and clocked in at #12 on the Billboard Radio Songs tally. By the way, Lady Gaga’s “Applause” slipped 2 spots down the Hot 100 to #6.

Perry’s latest accomplishment – “Roar” is her 8th #1 single – has positioned her among the most successful female artists in the history of the Hot 100. In fact, the only such performers who have topped the lineup on more occasions are Mariah Carey (18), Madonna (12), Rihanna (12), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10).
