How to choose the brand of a digital piano?

What brand of a digital piano can we consider?

There are those who say that “Roland pianos are the best” or that “if you buy a piano - then it's only from Yamaha”. The choice of the brand of a piano is not obvious.

In my opinion, if you consider a digital piano, you can choose from the following brands. These are the manufacturers that have been on the market for over 20 years and they are manufacturers from Japan, the United States or South Korea:

  • Yamaha
  • Roland
  • Kawai
  • Casio
  • Elpiano (the manufacturer: Dynatone)
  • Korg
  • Samick

Yamaha

It is the most popular brand, not just for pianos but for all other instruments. Digital pianos with a good keyboard, which look well like an acoustic piano, are the pianos of the Clavinova series. The most popular models of the Clavinova series are:

Roland

It's more like Mercedes for cars (you pay more for a brand). For example for the simplest model, with an average keyboard, Roland F-120, we pay almost $1000. Normally this is the price of much more advanced models. Roland's basic models are then RP-301 and F-120 at a price of $1000.

Kawai

It is above all a manufacturer of pianos and large acoustic pianos. Their care for keyboards is also clearly visible on digital piano keyboards. The range of Kawai digital pianos is very comprehensive and models vary considerably, both in terms of possibilities, keyboard and prices.

Casio

In my opinion it is a difficult brand to classify. The series by Casio Celviano is the most popular among the students of the music conservatory. In the Casio offer there are currently two series of digital pianos: Privia and Celviano. Part of the Privia series are models that have a keyboard with very light keys, reminiscent of a keyboard. After testing models from the Celviano series, I have the impression that the tones and key mechanisms of these models are very similar. Usually they have keyboard keys which are quite hard, harder than those of Yamaha or Kawai pianos.

Elpiano

Elpiano pianos are made by Dynatone, the largest manufacturer of digital pianos in South Korea. They are instruments with an excellent quality / price ratio. Dynamic, weighted keyboard pianos with a hammer mechanism are priced at $750 - $950.

Korg

At the origin of keyboards, Korg is renowned for the sound, its many options, the speakers, the different voices (not just the piano sound). For pianists looking for a keyboard closer to acoustic pianos, I recommend other manufacturers. The choice of digital piano models at Korg is very limited, the models available are: LP-350 and LP-380.
