3 of Janet Jackson’s iconic eras.

This week’s Way Back Wednesday special was initially planned to focus on the signature songs of various artists but once the creative juices started flowing – get you mind out the gutter – I realised that we could expand this instalment into an entire series. So, to kickoff the fun, let’s dive ears first into Janet Jackson’s catalogue.

Obviously, Jackson has several classic songs but which track is her undisputed definitive hit? This isn’t a discussion regarding her most commercially successful tune or your personal favourite jam. Rather, our focus is to determine which of Jackson’s record had such a great cultural impact that most people remember it when they think of her.

Check out the list of Jackson’s most memorable tunes below:

“Again”

“All for You”

“Control”

“If”

“The Pleasure Principle”

“Rhythm Nation”

“That’s the Way Love Goes”

“Together Again”

Regarding cultural significance, Jackson’s signature song is definitely “Rhythm Nation”. The impact of that record and its accompanying video on dance, music and visual arts was far larger than any of Jackson’s other hits. In fact, it was so great that it even inspired her brother Michael as her planned his HIStory World Tour.

We can’t, however, overlook Jackson’s The Velvet Rope era and the number of artists that have emulated the styling of songs like “Together Again”. Indeed, with a career of so many important hits and creative peaks, everyone won’t agree on just one signature tune for Jackson.

What is Jackson’s signature song? What other songs should have been mentioned? Vote in the Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!
