So far, Christina Aguilera’s team has completely mismanaged her ‘Lotus‘ project but they aren’t finished causing chaos amongst her fans just yet. Moments ago, RCA Records announced the new single to support the record and the decision is almost as puzzling as Aguilera’s choice not to hire a vocal coach.
‘Just a Fool’ will serve as the official followup to the ill-fated lead ‘Lotus’ single, ‘Your Body’. Featuring Aguilera’s fellow ‘The Voice’ coach, Blake Shelton, the song is one of the most memorable cuts on the album but not because of its quality. Rather, the screaming match is simply impossible to forget.
If you haven’t heard ‘Just a Fool’, which is such an ironic song title given this poor single selection, then watch Aguilera describe the recording of the track and listen to it below:
As noted in my album review of ‘Lotus’, ‘Just a Fool’ is literally a war of notes and not the type of song that should be unleashed so recklessly on radio. The over the top vocals are simply abrasive and would scare away not only all the fish in nearby lakes, but also casual listeners.
Still, perhaps Aguilera and her camp will prove her detractors wrong. Given the mass appeal of Blake, who is a very consistent act on the charts, and the Country connection of the song, ‘Just a Fool’ might take off on the Adult Contemporary formats, thus attracting album-buyers. If not, then Aguilera can always claim that it is another “masterpiece” like the material on ‘Bionic’ and radio audiences are just too stupid to appreciate it.
