Nicki Minaj Scores Most Successful Single By Female Rapper In 9 Years

Nicki Minaj has left her mark in the history books. The rapper’s ‘Super Bass’ is now the most successful song by a solo female rapper on the Billboard Hot 100 in almost a decade.

After climbing to #3 on last week’s lineup, Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ became the highest charting single by a solo female Rap artist on the chart without the assistance of a featured act since Missy Elliott’s ‘Work It’ which peaked at #2 in 2002. Additionally, the track is only the 8th single by a solo female rapper to climb to the top 10 in the history of the Hot 100.

To date, ‘Super Bass’ has been certified double platinum. Congratulations!

Sure there’s rapping, but is it really a rap song? Compared to Laryn Hill? No.

It’s great to see a female emcee achieving success, especially because they’re so scarce, but in all honesty, I’m sure many people, such as myself, don’t consider a lot of her songs real rap material. Yes, there’s rapping of course on Super Bass, but it really is a pop crossover song, hence why it’s doing so well in this dance/pop/electro era. Compared to the type of rap music released by Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill, Nicki’s achievement really doesn’t seem wholesome and pure. But maybe she’ll finally get a #1 with her own song, which would be cool, instead of having to collaborating with everyone else to climb the Hot 100 chart.

She shouldn’t even be considered to be a rapper anymore. It’s great that she’s doing big things, but, she threw her “rapper” title out the door to have pop success.

Is Super Bass really considered a rap song because this song is str8 crossover Pop/Dance. I want to see a female MC get another top 10 song that is str8 hip-hop.
