Way Back Wednesday: Whitney Houston – ‘I Will Always Love You’

Whitney Houston proclaimed her dominance of the music industry in 1992 with the release of her biggest hit, ‘I Will Always Love You’. Smashing numerous records across the globe, the song held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a then record 14 weeks and also topped the charts in 15 other countries.

The Dolly Parton cover also gave Houston her 3rd Grammy Award for ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’ and helped to cement position her as one of the leading vocalists of our time. By utilising lung-busting belts and thrilling vocal runs, the diva separated herself from her peers, as depicted in the above rendition at Arista’s 25th anniversary special in 2000.

Unfortunately, this was one of few times in the last decade that Houston’s voice shined in such a way. After years of drug abuse and cigarettes, even the opening note of the song has become too much for her to handle.

On the bright side, Houston has returned to rehab and is currently working to salvage what is left of her vocal cords. She might not be able to return to her former glory but at least she can try. Until then, we will always have YouTube.

It’s a shame that the two best singers of the 1990s are on the vocal outs. BOTH Whitney and Mariah’s voices are the pits now. Whitney drugged her voice out, Mariah abused hers.

@Greatesteva why do you damn Whitney stans act as though Mariah’s voice is gone? Mariah still sounds really good. She isn’t as good as the 90′s but she is still a beast. Don’t act as though they “both” sound bad. Just Whitney.

Whitney went on in the 90s to have 3 successfull movies starring and co-starring her based on her name:
    The Bodyguard
    Waiting to Exhale
    The Preachers Wife
all of which are considered classics and replayed at least 5-10xs a year on tv.
She had successful soundtracks from each movie and then the 11million selling ‘My Love is Your Love’ that earned her another Grammy so not sure what Trent is talking about re minimal success afterwards.

Her Bodyguard tour lasted 2 years and her MLIYl tour was the largest arena tour in Europe and had to be extended that year.

There are tons of clips on Youtube of her siningIWALY better than that in Europe on tour, tons, youtube poland 1999, Singapore, Tokyo, London etc

Hopefully her work on herself will help her as her power and head notes are still there.
