It finally happened. Katy Perry has matched Michael Jackson’s longstanding record of 5 #1 songs from a single album as her latest release, ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’, climbs to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
‘Friday’ catapults to the top of the tally thanks to the assistance of Missy Elliott’s remix of the track. Perry is now the first woman and only the second artist in history to achieve 5 #1 singles from one album, tying the record set by Michael Jackson in 1988 with his ‘Bad’ project.
The singer has also matched Mariah Carey for having 5 consecutive #1 singles on the Hot 100, placing her in 2nd place amongst all artists behind only Whitney Houston who notched 7 chart-toppers from 1985 to 1988.
Meanwhile, on the Billboard 200, The Throne’s ‘Watch The Throne’ has debuted at #1 with 436k copies sold, bumping Adele’s ’21′ from the top spot. See the leading Urban/Pop releases from the top 10 of both Billboard 200 and the Hot 100 below:

Katy “Big Tits” Perry matching Michael “There Will Never Be Another” Jackson…The music industry has gone to hell and has been repeatedly sodomized by the DEVIL. *depressed*
I have 0 respect for Katy and her desperate tactics for a #5th #1. The remixes, dropping the prices, payola. She’s a singles artist, who doesn’t make classics. MJ sold 30 million WW with Bad and produced a timeless album, Katy can’t even reach double platinum.
In my opinion, she sucks because she’s none of these:A good vocalist,A good dancer,A good entertainer/performer.I find most of other acts better than her.But yeah,I know she’s got those radio friendly singles,so good for her.Afterall we know she did everything in her power to make this tragedy happen.
I’m happy for her. She deserves it!
Five #1 singles by a talentless act from an album which is yet to go double platinum? It’s official:US mainstream music market sucks.
I doubt she touches Whitney’s record
MAJOR ASTERISK * song falters and a remix single comes out and vaults the single back up for that purpose…no remix at the original release….. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDER UNETHICAL IN BILLBOARD CHART HISTORY….KATY IS A WACK ARTIST AND BILLBOARD MAGAZINE SHOULDN’T HONOR HER WITH THIS
@Vanessa Teenage Dream is double platinum you ass!
if this isn’t a sign of the world coming to an end then i don’t know what it is, 5 *successful* number ones, payalo etc.. and now she is tied with MJ, that actually makes me feel physically sick, Michael earned those number ones, without using pathetic tactics such as remixing the song as its about to hit number one, pathetic and should not be allowed to chart..
SMFH
Ummm remix’s shouldnt count towards an original released song’s chart position.
SMFH in this past week both BillBoard & RollingStone have solidified their place on my ‘AINT SHIT LIST’
I really cant believe the fuckery thats bein praised by music industry elites.
My thing is pre-Itunes artists & post-Itunes artists achievements/stats shouldnt be compared to one another. MJ & other accomplished artists chart positions stemmed primarily 4rm radio spins. Given the creation of Itunes & other singles purchase providers, asterisks should be placed next to artists stats in today’s modern era IMO.
Spechless. I have no words to describe my disappointment.
The fact that people are supporting this kind of music nowaydas makes me sick…. *MJ is spinning in his grave*
bullshit!, again, where is the hype around this chick?
Cosign @KD
the fact that billboard is run by a bunch of 12 year old girls goes to show that her number 1s don’t mean shit. the fact that a REMIX had to be released in order for it to go number 1 whilst Michael earned all of his success the right way. i am ashamed that music has gone down. Katy doesn’t sing, dance, or entertain very well at all yet 5 #1s? has the music world gone mad? or maybe its just my upbringing where my mother made me listen to her music (MJ, Prince, Aretha, Sade, Marvin,Madonna, etc). but its not just her. all these pop artist out here who make all these remixes for shock value and sales goes to show that talent is lacking in this generation. I guess as long as you have radio friendly and catchy singles, you can sell.
