While Rihanna was stumbling around the stage during her set at ‘Rock in Rio’ last evening, Alicia Keys showed the iHeartRadio Music Festival audience the sound of real talent. In fact, the singer used the opportunity at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to debut a new song entitled ‘A Place of My Own’.
Watch Keys’ rendition below:
Although Keys has definitely put forward stronger vocal performances in her career, this song is still quite enthralling. The most prominent element of the arrangement, of course, was Keys’ piano playing, which framed an absolutely beautiful melody.
Keys’ ‘The Element of Freedom’ was a disappointing effort so her new album needs to deliver, especially now that the R&B market is suffering. However, if she has more songs like ‘A Place of My Own’ then she will certainly score a hit.

love the melody, but she sounded so off key in the beginning.

Like The Sea, How It Feels to Fly, & That’s How Strong My Love Is – these songs from ‘Element of Freedom’ are AMAZING.
Trent, Im sad you don’t share the same feeling about that album. I do believe it was horribly promoted and released at a bad time. I don’t know why her and Trey Songz thought I would be wise to release an album full of slow songs in the middle of summer. *drake shrug*
Anywho… “Place of My Own” sounds just like all the rest of Alicia’s music. That’s not a bad thing. But, I wanna see Mrs. Swizzy experiment with more upbeat music like ‘Karma’ and ‘Heartburn’ from her Diary album. I hope *fingers crossed* her new album goes more in that direction.
the problem is now her music will be defined by homewrecking…sorry but thats the truth. now she has a place to make a home…but she broke one…yada yada
but vocally..her voice is leaving and has been for a while.
I LOVED Element of Freedom. It was poorly promoted but it had strong 1st week numbers. It just didn’t go number 1. And then she got pregnant. But the album was amazing. This song on the other hand didn’t thrill me. It was ok. An album filler, but not a lead single.
Alicia needs to swallow her pride and hire a vocal coach and some writers. “When it rains it pours” “make this house a home” this song sounds like she threw generic phrases together. And that screaming…
I own all of her albums and think she should go back to the As I Am sound. That was a masterpiece.
The song sounds boring to me. I will wait for the studio version because I was not impressed with the live performance
All of you have to be some tired Rihanna fans. I DO agree that she was hoarse, she sounded sick TBH BUT this song is everything and definitely has that long term hit to it. What do y’all want her to sing about? ASS? I’m happy she’s not siinging about lo9vey shit this go around!
The vocal is expededly low, shes obivously in the middle of an exhausting concert and the sweat can be seen on her head. As for the sng im liking the production but need to here the studio version, as some above has siad the lyrics do seem a bit tired.
I do agree TEOF album is very under rated. I believe her pregnancy interfered with the promotion of that album, although I applaud her for continuing with her touring at that time. Some songs that weren’t released, in my opinion, were the very best from the album. ??? I already love this song and I’m glad she gave us something new. Looking forward to her new album because Alicia is truly a one of kind talent who only continues to get better. No matter what she’s singing about she is all heart.
I know people were hating on her vocals but for me the raspiness ads something to it and the MJ earth song screams lol
I really like this song, it’s better than most songs on “The ellement of freedom”.
Not feeling it. sounds generic and she needs to sip some more water, the straining and hoarsness was not too good.
