Did you know that when Whitney Houston was denied a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist it caused major industry controversy?
The diva released her self-titled debut album in 1985 and she scored multiple nominations at the 1986 ceremony, including Album of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the last of which she won for ‘Saving All My Love For You’. However, Houston was rejected from the Best New Artist category because she previously appeared on a duet with Teddy Pendergrass entitled ‘Hold Me’ from his ‘Love Language’ album in 1984 and was not considered as a new act.
Houston’s denial from the field caused uproar at her Arista Records label and the president of the company, Clive Davis, wrote a letter National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to demand her inclusion. However, his efforts were futile and the show continued as planned with Sade eventually winning the Best New Artist title.
Didnt they do this to lady gaga also? Thanks trent!
interesting
which was crazy because then jody watley went on to win best new artist the following year and she was in shalamar
It’s funny the rule changed after gaga was shut out. Things that make you go hmmm.
Def didn’t know this one! Thanks!
Umm… Jody was part of a group…she went solo…learn the academy before u denounce it!
Yes, Whitney was robbed of this> It doesn’t matter if Jody was a part of a group, she was not a new artist which was the gist of the argument.
Whitney slayed that year to be so young, have a sucessful modelling career and to be nominated for the big Grammy categories tells you what her impact was at that time!
Thank u Entertainer, blogjacker maybe u should learn it first
Gaga wasn’t nominated for Best New Artist in 2010 because Just Dance was nominated for Best Dance Recording and if you’re featured on a full length studio LP or already a Grammy nominee before you’re first studio LP is released, you can’t be nominated in the Best New Artist category. It changed for Drake in 2011, not Gaga.
She Should Have Won Best New Artist…No Doubt!
