‘When Doves Cry’ dominated the Hot 100 for five weeks in 1984 as Prince’s longest-running #1 song and most successful release on the the chart. In fact, ‘When Doves Cry’, which was released by Prince and the Revolution – the legendary performer’s band – was Prince’s first #1 hit on the Hot 100.
To date, Prince has notched five #1 songs on the Hot 100 – ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Kiss’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Cream’ and ‘Batdance’. Shockingly, his iconic ‘Purple Rain’ single only peaked at #2. Listen to ‘When Doves Cry’ below:
Good times. I’m old enough to remember when the movie first came out. And “When Doves Cry” was EVERYWHERE! You couldn’t turn on the radio and *not* hear it–not that I’m complaining, hehe!
If I knew back then that the music industry would become the shithole it now is, I would’ve appreciated the 80s and 90s A LOT MORE.
