Way Back Wednesday: Her Majesty Madonna

    Madonna

Throughout the history of Pop music, there were future artists who have had an impact on popular culture that could even be compared to that of Madonna. Now, as her recording career nears its final days, Way Back Wednesday will highlight her contributions to the music industry.

As a songwriter, live performer and visual entertainer, Madonna has proven herself to be one of the most important artists of our time, and her work has inspired generations of artists, including Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Beyonce and of course, Lady Gaga. Indeed, her creativity and influence is equalled by only a select few.

Watch some of Madonna’s best videos and performances below:

    ‘Die Another Day’

    ‘Express Youself’

    ‘Frozen’

    ‘Hung Up’

    ‘Like a Prayer’

    ‘Like a Virgin’

    ‘Ray of Light’

    ‘Take a Bow (with Babyface)’

    ‘Vogue’

Madonna may not be the best singer or even a complete original – let’s not pretend that the similarities between some of her work and Michael Jackson’s pieces weren’t obvious – but she is a force of nature. In fact, if she didn’t exist then the industry as we know it today would be completely different, especially for women who have been able enjoy increased freedoms as a result of her many feminist statements.

Still, as we look to the future, it is clear that Madonna’s recording career is on its last leg. Her music has become redundant and out of touch, and she only gets attention through her extreme onstage antics or via political aggression. Perhaps, she should focus her efforts on touring similar to what Tina Turner did into her 70s because we all know that nobody can sell out a stadium faster than Madonna.

What are you favourite Madonna songs? What is the best tune from those listed above? Vote in our Way Back Wednesday poll and share your opinion!

I love me some Madonna but I’ve grown tired of her ”look at me trying to be young” antics. The only way she can save herself is if she starts to act her age.

I “haven’t really listened to madonna since she was popular”. Madonna needs to go back to the bedtime story soul music….or at least great dance floor anthems. She also needs to sing HITS at her shows and not change them and make them weak. People at her show was looking at each other saying “why did she change the song”…. She has finally lost her touch….

“Throughout the history of Pop music, there were future artists who have had an impact on popular culture that could even be compared to that of Madonna. I'm laughing so hard right now there's no sound coming out!

I have never been a Madonna fan. I just don't get her hype, but I understand her influence. Hell, if Madonna had never existed Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, etc… would not be jumping on stage half-naked.

It seems to me that Madoona has forgotten who she was. She should be creating new trends, not following them.

There is no question that Madonna’s sales are way down from the “glory” days, but I would never write her off, don’t forget that MDNA still went to number 1 in many countries and the tour is still going to rank as one the most successful for a solo artist, not bad for some one who’s past it ;) For me MDNA is one of her strongest albums, it has just lacked any kind of radio/tv promotion.
