Ever since Ashanti finally learned how to belt, she has been excited to show off her new skills whenever she managed to book a stage. For her latest appearance, the singer-songwriter appeared on ‘LIVE! With Kelly & Michael’ where she performed a rendition of Donny Hathaway’s ‘This Christmas’.

In case you don’t remember, Ashanti first recorded ‘This Christmas’ as part of her ‘Ashanti’s Christmas’ album at the height of her popularity in 2003. Don’t hate yourself for overlooking that little fact, though, because the album flopped – it peaked at #160 on the Billboard 200 – and most people have since forgotten it.

Compared to how she sounded when she first recorded ‘This Christmas’, Ashanti has seriously improved. Yes, she mainly sounds good while belting and she has almost zero breath support while singing in the other registers of her voice – the lower she goes, the thinner her sound – but Ashanti deserves a gold star for at least trying to better herself.
