Leona Lewis has long been accused of being a dull performer and in a recent interview with Rollacoaster magazine she openly welcomed those claims. In fact, the singer, who promised to shock her critics with the Trip-Hop sound of her upcoming ‘Trouble’ single, retorted by saying that she would rather be seen as boring than “brash”.
Read what Lewis had to say below:
“I’ve read it, especially from one journalist who has never met me. But it doesn’t bother me. I’d rather be seen like that than a harsh, brash person. If my friends said that, then I’d have something to worry about.”
“I’ve grown as a performer, as a singer, everything. I was in that weird teenage-adult stage for a long time – making decisions that perhaps weren’t right – but I’ve realised in the last couple of years that I know myself so much more.”

As admirable as Lewis’ self-confidence may be, she would do well to understand that being a public figure is about balancing her personal identity with the perception of consumers. Her goal as an artist is not just to make music; she also has to sell it.
Indeed, while Lewis is an extraordinarily talented vocalist, the era of the stoic diva who simply stands at the mic stand and belts at the audience has ended and she has to market herself in every possible regard. She is not expected to wine on stage like Rihanna or bounce her backside like Beyonce but simply interpreting her material in a more passionate and believable way could do wonders for her career. For instance, Adele rarely moves an inch yet she is far more interesting than Lewis.
Perhaps, Lewis should pay closer attention to the divas who she considers to be her biggest influences and see how they adapted to the changes in the industry. She does not have to strip down to lingerie like Mariah Carey but there is no doubt that her predecessor’s comedic onstage ranting about Hello Kitty and clever lyrics that reflect the struggles of her life have helped her to remain relevant.

Nothing about Leona is even remotely interesting which makes her ‘new’ dance sound all the more perplexing. If you are going to record a dance record you’d better damn well know how to promote it and Leona simply doesn’t.
I have said it time and time again, while she has a good voice, she still needs to find herself musically, so side-eye to the whole “I know myself so much more” nonsense.

LOL… Any excuse to bring Mariah into an post… Maybe Leona has found herself musically, she doesn’t have to be anything other than what she is.
She can sing and her new music sounds good, If i wanted to see a comedian i’d go and see one, i buy albums for the MUSIC not the personality of the person singing it.

She has an incredible voice, no doubt at all about that, but she’s so so dull. So boring. There’s nothing exciting or interesting about her…even when she talks in interviews and stuff. Seeing Adele live was amazing; yeah she just sits/stands and sings, but she’s got such a great personality and a wicked sense of humour that makes people warm to her. Leona is so talented but just doesn’t seem to have the endearing personality to go with it.
