Leona Lewis is shedding her shy persona in favour of a more controversially outspoken attitude. In addition to her recent interview with Rollacoaster magazine, where she slammed persons who call her boring, the singer spoke to Stylist magazine and blasted her fellow Pop stars who she perceives as being too “sexy”.
Lewis, who will will release her ‘Glassheart’ album on November 28th, even went as far as to label the antics of her counterparts as “insulting” to her as a woman. Read what she had to say below:
“Personally, I think some people go too far,” she told Stylist magazine. “I don’t really like to see people dancing around a pole or gyrating on a guy every time I go to a concert.
“I just don’t think there is any need for it. I’d rather be something positive, especially to young girls. It’s not something I want to represent and I find it a bit insulting as a woman. There’s a way to be sexy that’s not too in your face.”
Lewis added that she has no plans to strip naked for a photoshoot, and that she is “happy” with her body.
“I would never do a bikini shoot. It’s too embarrassing,” she said. “No weird sex books for me either. I watch what I eat and I eat really healthily most of the time, but other times, I’ll just eat what I want. I’m happy with my figure.”

I agree with Lewis’ remarks to some extent. Some artists – both male and female – simply sell sex and rely on risque music videos and performances as tools to compensate for their blatant lack of talent. For instance, Rihanna isn’t known for her incredible vocal ability or her awe-inspiring dance routines. Instead, she is known for what she can do with whips, chains and brightly coloured hair pieces.
On the other hand, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people being commanding their sexualities and expressing them in ways that make them feel comfortable and attract their desired target audience. Indeed, as long as the artist isn’t selling Disney music to teenage girls while wearing nothing but floss then they aren’t breaking any laws.
Furthermore, there are many exceptionally talented female performers who wear revealing clothing and “dance around poles” during their concerts. For example, Janet Jackson regularly brings men onto the stage as part of her setlist. Still, it is all about balance.
Lewis seems to be very conservative about her sexuality and quite eager to conform to the laws of a patriarchal society in which women aren’t free to express themselves. Her personal choices are respectable but she may want to consider how she upset she felt when people called her boring because she is being just as derisive with her own generalisations.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Trent (this doesn’t happen too often!). If she would put this much attitude and personality into her records, then ppl might consider buying them. Until then, stay boring.

I like Leona and I see wher she is coming from. There is a way to do sexy and a way NOT to do sexy in my opinion. Take for example Janet (which you explained perfectly Trent) and even an artist like Usher or even Maxwell. These are artists who not sing about sex, but make it so visual to you in music that there’s no denying that’s what theyre talking about. lol BUT, these are also artists that have balance in their music. Not many artists can sing about sex and being confident in yourself and abilities, ala Ms. Jackson, and then turn around and make inspiring music that can uplift generations. Janet IS one of those artists. In fact, she might be the only female artist to ever do it at such a high level. Janet is not known as a hoe, but a classy woman. It’s not what you do, but the way in which you do it.
So is Maxwell for example. Or even Marvin Gaye back in the day. He can have a song like “Let’s Get It On” and a song like “What’s Going On”. Variety is key in this industry or else you will be placed in a box that no one no longer cares to open. When ALL you do is sell sex, people will begin to look at you as an item. Just like in a relationship.
It says a lot about a person who can balance that…especially in music. And people have to understand, Rihanna is an artist who is given all her music. She doesnt write any of it. She is an artists who is therefore treated like an item. Until she proves her talent is worth something, she will continue to sell sex because that is all ppl seem to hear from her. But, whatever. She’s not my kind of artist anyway.
And one more thing….there is a difference between SEX and SEXY! Beyonce might be a good example here. She is an artist who sells SEXY very well. She sells sexy through her “female empowering” songs. She creates music that people can dance freely to and sing to (like anthems) while being out there visually. Everytime I see her on stage, she never has pants on (besides maybe her recent baby announcement at the VMA’s) but you wouldn’t consider a hoe neither. So there is a way to do it and a way NOT to do it. A way that is more respected, especially if by nature, you are very sexual person like Janet.
Forget the article that gif is the highlight.

1. She said this is HER opinion, she didn’t say it was right or wrong she just said she doesn’t agree with it, that is hardly “Bashing” anyone…
2. She’s actually right, I’m all for the sexy vids and stuff but sometimes it does get boring, nobody is using sexuality in a unique or daring way like Madonna, Britney, Xtina and Janet did back in the day it’s just plain old sex and after a while it gets boring which is why so many people are happy that Adele has come along and sold a ton of albums by just being classy and singing great songs in a great voice with no BS.
3. If anyone’s “Bashing” Trent is bashing Leona, how many negative posts about Leona have there been today? #YouMad?
she is right

Co-fucking-sign, Trent. Co-fucking-sign.
Tiffany Pollard…. yasssssssssss! LMAO
Agree with you 100%. I’m so tired of these double-standard singers who pretend not to care about image (sexy or not) Just a few months ago she reappeared on the media showing a new nose and wearing these crazy tight “horsy” outfits, did anyone lash her back for her tasteless sense of fashion?? No really -well maybe just Mrs. Rivers!
Lay back girl. Do what you want with your image, let the other bitches be what they want to be; singers/celebrities AREN’T role models. #bye
Am I the only one looking at Lala’s face in that gif? LMAO. She went from laughter to “Bitch sit down”.
Yes, this is Leona’s opinion. Some people are more comfortable with their bodies and sexuality and feel comfortable literally selling it! Some Artists are more comfortable being more conservative and concentratining on their talent. There is a place for both artists in Music today.
