This week’s Way Back Wednesday comes from the most electrifying female performer of our time – Tina Turner. ‘Proud Mary’ was originally performed by the band Creedence Clearwater Revival but was later immortalised by Turner who thrilled audiences around the world for 40 years with her live routines.
What set Turner apart from her younger counterparts who currently dominate the music scene was the simple fact that she never relied on a backtrack. Regardless of how tired she became during a show, she would still perform completely live; singing ballads and uptempos without lip-syncing. That was the key component of the Rock era that has been lost today and why Turner is truly one of a kind.
Still, it should be noted that as a Rock & Roll performer, Turner’s voice was under far less scrutiny than the R&B and Pop singer’s of today. Indeed, the main attraction of her shows was the performance and not pitch-perfect singing.
