Did you know that R&B singer Vanessa Williams was the first African-American woman to win the Miss America title?
Williams was crowned Miss America 1984 on September 17th 1983. However, she was forced to relinquish her title after only 10 months following the unauthorised publishing of sensual images in Penthouse magazine that she had taken prior to her reign.
Yet, Williams eventually launched a largely successful career in both music and film. She is best known for her lone Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit, ‘Save the Best for Last’, from her triple platinum ‘The Comfort Zone’ album and her Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award-winning recording, ‘Colors of the Wind‘, from the ‘Pocahontas’ soundtrack.
