Rihanna: “There’s Nobody In My League”

Written by Trent | Filed under Beyonce,Rihanna

Rihanna has amassed eleven chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100, countless awards and multiple platinum albums so it was no surprise to see that her ego has grown to match the size of her catalogue of hits. In fact, in a recent interview with Look magazine, the trendy star declared that she is in her a league of her own.

Rebuffing any comparisons to fellow Pop star Beyonce, Rihanna emphasised that she has her own unique performance style and that she has no direct competition in the industry. In Rihanna’s mind, she is in a lane of her very own.

Read what Rihanna had to say below:

It’s good to see that she knows she’s a berluddy good popstar, telling Look magazine; “There’s nobody really in my league,” when asked who she sees herself in competition with. ”But there’s competition everywhere. The whole music industry is competition. There are people who like other artists, those who like me and others who like both.”

“Beyonce is a great artist and I feel honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence, but we’re different performers with different styles.”

So who does someone as huge as Rihanna look to for inspiration? ”Madonna,” she reveals. “She reinvented her style and music with success every single time, and at the same time remained a real force. She’s fantastic.”

    Read more on Digital Spy.

Honestly, Rihanna was quite accurate with her statements; she is indeed in her own lane and she does have a different performance style from Beyonce. The latter actually has the ability to sing, dance and engage an audience whereas Rihanna simply walks around the stage, chants lyrics and only pauses to demonstrate her embarrassingly stiff wine.

Furthermore, Madonna’s influence on Rihanna is blatant. Madonna can’t sing, she based her entire career on selling sex and with the exception of her ‘Ray of Light’ album, every project that she has crafted relied on a string of controversial videos in order to have an impact. Really, both women are perfect examples of visual entertainers.

From a musical standpoint, Rihanna has carved her own niche. Her brand Reggae Fusion is unique in the current era of music and several artists – Keri Hilson and Ciara – have tried to capitalise on her sound so that they could score similar success on the charts. However, with the exception of those Reggae Fusion tunes, Rihanna is just another Pop act.

I’m not quite sure if she was being cocky or just was trying to avoid the comparison to Beyoncé. Either way I agree with you Trent, she’s definitely in her own league and is a pity that instead of getting out of her comfort zone she keeps releasing the same kind of music. Other than “Umbrella” there’s not much to say honestly. She’s certainly trying to imitate Madonna… but she could never.

I agree also, Madonna’s Ray of light is her best ever! The Power of Goodbye >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rihanna’s entire catalogue.

Why do artist start believing their own press releases, I can understand trying to separate yourself from other artist, but that’s best achieved on stage.I can see her admiring Madonna for the reasons you mentioned.Rihanna still has time to find her own niche.Great post Trent

1st of all when you look at billboard 100 and 200 everyone that makes the top 10 is in your league sweetie. what an ignorant and self absorbed thing to say. Rihanna has been feeling herself way too much these days and it’s stuff like this that turns me off.

“Madonna. She reinvented her style and music with success every single time, and at the same time remained a real force. She’s fantastic.”
      - Chile Madonna is not your biggest influence. Maybe she’s you biggest for Talk That Talk. Who’s gonna influence your next album? Tell me this, how have you reinvented your music or music as a whole? Your singing is mediocre and you can’t even dance. You need to do some research on miss Madonna. If there’s anyone right now that you can tell has the influence of Madonna it’s Lady Gaga.

Rihanna seems to just talk and don’t even know what she’s really saying….smh

I hope you checked your sources before you published this article, because look magazine is known for fabricating stories, but then again you probably know this and don’t care, another opportunity to bash Rihanna that you simply couldnt pass up? Even if this artIcle is real I fail to see what is wrong with it IMO! She didn’t disrespect anyone.

Yes Rihanna you are in your own lane, no one quite warbles the way you do…oh please!! Unlike Madonna in about 10 years I can’t see ne1 caring that much for Rihanna’s music, apart frm Umbrella she hasn’t really released any iconic songs.
Kudo’s to her tho for avoiding the Beyonce comparisons, at this stage in her career the comparisons don’t make sense. Their two completely different artists!

Rihanna fans are dumb. If Trent didn’t write about Rihanna they cry about her not getting shine on the site. But, because view of her is not glazed over like theirs, they’d rather him just not talk at all. This is sad…

They should have never taken prayer out of the schools.

Rihanna is still reaping from the sympathy quotient and will for a minute or two. She has no real talent but her defenders don’t want to see who or what she really is. This sympathy for her will probably last until Chris is off probation, marries and/or have a child by someone else. Proving that he’s moved on and she can be as irrelevant as she should be.

Get mad if ya want, truth hurts sometimes.

      For now.

But it is what it is.

Let her ride this train ’til the wheels fall off. LOL.

Oh and yeah, her and Gaga BLEED Madonna’s look. I ventured through a tumblr dedicated to Madonna recently. So many past pictures, photoshoots, etc. of Madonna and her style has been xeroxed beyond belief by Rih and Gaga. I mean, I was like, what the what? So yeah…

She’s also been inspired by Mariah Carey, who she has said countless times is a major influence to her. Sometimes these artists just throw out random names just to avoid the typical comparisons. Rihanna does have her own thing going on. But she and Beyonce are two completely diferent artists.

She’s wasn’t saying it to say she was better than anyone she was saying that there isn’t anyone currently who does the same style as her, and when you think about it she is right. Beyonce, Katy, Gaga, Adele, Britney, none o these artists are like Rihanna.

despite what you’re all saying she is talented, rich, beautiful and has had 10 straight number #1 singles. Sex sales: Just ask Madonna! For that matter ask any women or man.

BTW If you like her music, of “You Da One” it’s almost better than the original

@Shawna is obviously deaf like all the other RiYAWNa fans.

Of course no one is in her league. I mean how many other artists cant’s sing, dance, write, arrange, produce, and still be successful? Its a reflection of the mental simplicity of today’s children more than it is a league. To think her fans will one day have a say in important decisions….God help us all.

Trent Madonna has done more than just sell sex. The last albums in the last 10 years, after she has had kids really aren’t that sexual.

Have you seen her in concert? She can sing. Her voice isn’t big, but she sings in tune, quite well and his learned how to paly the guitar at an age most people wouldn’t dare. She’s a hard worker and she doesn’t lip sync like ppl think she does.

She puts on a show! There is a reason why her shows sell out. Maybe you just haven’t seen her in concert in your country. Those who have, even if they aren’t die-hard fans, after seeing her appreciate her talent and hard work at what, age 50?!

@Kenya Rihanna is so not outdoing beyonce …check d facts please. Have you noticed that she doesn’t make it on Forbes list (I.e rihanna) because she hardly has any creative input in her music hence no royalties. For a supposedly flop album Beyonce has sold over a million copies in d US alone…so sales nd talent wise beyonce is so above rihanna. Don’t get me wrong I like me some rihanna songs cuz their catchy. Jam them while they are still hot and then move on.
