Chris Brown, Britney Spears and a host of other artists have a new home. These acts are now among an extensive list of performers who comprise the roster of RCA Music Group.
CEO Peter Edge broke the news to Billboard about how the revamped RCA plans to compete in the slowly recovering industry, following the restructuring of Sony Music Entertainment to include LA Reid as the new head of the Epic Label Group. Read what he had to say below:
How big is the roster?
We are still working on our newly combined roster. But when we get done, it will have about 70-80 acts, which is a good, manageable number. It will include a lot of superstars like Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, R. Kelly, Ke$ha, Daughtry, Christina [Aguilera], Kelly Clarkson, Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake. How is the label weighted genre-wise?
We are market leaders in R&B and we want to up the ante on hip-hop. We just hired J Grand, who is one of the key players at Asylum. He will be working to bring more hip-hop here.We have Bryan Leach, who signed Pitbull and is working on other plays. So there is a definite plan to expand our dominance in R&B and grow hip-hop. A few significant signings in hip-hop will round out what we are doing in the urban area.
And in pop?
We have a long list of artists including Ke$ha, Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears. But still we want to grow here as we want to grow in urban. The other area I really want to grow is our rock roster. We already have artists like the Kings Of Leon, the Foo Fighters, the Dave Matthews Band, the Strokes and Ray LaMontagne, to name a few. But our focus is to build the next generation of rock artists. We have an act called Walk the Moon that I am excited about. We have a lot of people here who know about rock and alternative music. I am a fan of it and have a passion for it. Hopefully, we can encourage everyone to work more on those kinds of acts. Overall, I want to underline we are going to be a great music company, with music being the top of our focus.

This news is bittersweet. While Brown will certainly benefit from the shift because of RCA’s obvious focus on developing a variety of Pop and Hip-Hop acts thus allowing him to continue to branch out and access a global audience, Christina Aguilera will likely suffer.
She has been the dominant female act on RCA for quite some time but now the far more commercially viable Spears has made the move into her territory. Aguilera may find herself playing runner-up for label attention which could only dampen her chances of making a successful comeback.
Furthermore, Jive Records clearly gave Spears top priority over Brown earlier this year with their promotional campaigns despite him being the bigger seller. Hopefully, the trend will not continue and everybody gets the chance to shine.
Trust no one.

Britney left Jive?!!
Looking @ the roster they only have three major R&B Chris, R Kelly & Alicia. I believe Chris will be more marketable because he can cross over with Pop, R&B and Hip Hop. But it will be very interesting…
Chris Brown will have more promo for his next album since #Fame is selling very good at the moment.
Where’s the Ciara news? *sigh*
Christina won’t be affected until after this album. She is signed to 5 studio albums with RCA and part of the contract is that she gets major promotion. Once her contract is over I think she will leave them in any case. Both her and kelly do not get on with the lable.
Well that britney GIF is hotttt!
Bad news for aguilera good news for chris brown
Im so here for Breezy havin betta executives over his promo campaigns.
@Ronald ch… CiCi aint on nobody’s radar over their @ what used to be Jive lol. Ever since she decided to go on this “invite only” tour I’ve completely lost track of her movement. But i know once an official announced statment by whateva label she lands on Trent will have the news. But she need to hurry up & get it 2getha cuz that RnB/HipHop lane is still available for the snatchin.
Well hopefully Chris will have better promotion!!! Can’t wait for Fortune and to see him on tour! Happy for Alicia Keys, R.Kelly, and Justin Timberlake as well! Hopefully Justin comes out with some music soon. I’m hoping that it won’t hurt Christina, but it most likely will, unfortunately… and I’m wondering about Ciara too…
Oh wow!
Ray Lamontagne is on RCA. Nice. I like so many artists on that label. Chris Brown – Love. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera – Love, R.Kelly – Love. Justin Timberlake = Love (when he sings only. that nigga can’t act. Quick someone tell him)
Love the Foo Fighters. I’m glad CEO Peter Edge says he wil try and focus on getting Rock back. Rock music needs a comeback bad! Jeez!
i was hoping chris didnt go to RCA
but im happy at the same time. from what they saying it seems like they are focusing a lot on the urban side. so hopefully chris wont fall into the shadows of Britney again label wise. it pisses me off!!P
but didnt la reid say epic was focusing on urban
Highly doubt that Xtina will get overshadowed by Britard since Femme Fatale was just recently released. This gives them time to focus on Xtina’s new album and her promo schedule. OMG the acts on there are amazing, hopefully we will get another Xtina/Alicia Keys collab, and a Brit/Xtina collab as well
Peter Edge did A&R for alicia keys so she will most def not suffer. Kelly Clarkson’s new cd is up next. She has a rocky relationship with the label. I think that they will give Xtina a good shot seeing that she has ‘The voice’ to work off but she better sell or she won’t get more than 2 singles unlike Chris or Britney.
