Katy Perry and her team at Capitol Records really want to break Michael Jackson’s record for having six #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 from a single album. Hence, in response to the Pop singer’s latest release, ‘The One That Got Away’, cascading to #6 on the chart on last week, they have issued yet another version of the tune.
‘The One That Got Away (Acoustic)’ has been rushed to iTunes and is currently available for 99 cents. This version of the song follows its original, which has been selling at 69 cents for the last few weeks, and the 99 cent official remix that features rapper B.o.B.
Listen to ’The One That Got Away (Acoustic)’ below:
As laughable as it has been to watch Perry’s team scramble against all odds to help her break Jackson’s record, there is no denying that this acoustic version ‘The One That Got Away’ is a great song. Call it desperation or brilliant business but what really matters is the music and Perry has delivered.
If Perry had not issued a string of copy/paste remixes during the last few months then most people would have been able to appreciate her material to a larger degree. Besides, her songs are actually good and far more deserving of the #1 slot on the Hot 100 than anything that Rihanna or Britney Spears have put forward during the last year.
What really bothers most people about Perry’s success if the fact that she is a basic Pop singer and hardly on the level of Jackson so critics feel threatened by the fact that she might surpass his record. Yet, was every Jackson song a classic or was it that his larger than life persona and brilliant videos made his music seem incomparable?
Either way, Perry could release as many versions of her songs that she could muster. As long as she doesn’t break any of the Billboard chart rules then she is simply playing the game that other artists have been doing for years. Remember the numerous price slashes and remixes that Destiny’s Child used to make the singles from their ‘Survivor’ album hits? If you’re too young to remember then hit that Google search bar.
This chick is a moron. She is a no-talent hack. If Billboard doesn’t change their rules after this f*ckery, I have no respect for them.
What about the price cuts and delayed releases Mariah Carey used to release, please trent your threatened by both Katy and Rihanna, they will break every mariah record, believe me!
LMAO, you should have saved the “body language” gif for Xtina, Trent. This post is NOT worth it at all.
@Rihbaby
Please do not place Katy and Rihanna in the same sentence as Mariah. Katy and Rihanna are manufactured talents boosted by the greed of industry heads. We can go on and on. The fact that Katy’s name is being thrown around with MJ’s is scary enough. Goes to show how the iTunes era has damaged the music industry
To me this “record breaking” mess is BS. Just because Katy perry and Rihanna outnumbered Legendary artists single achievements on Billboard don’t make their songs compare at all. Katy Perry has cute songs and she’s likeable but that’s as far as it goes. Michael Jackson had a Major impact and changed the meaning of “star power”, changed how people performed, sung, and overall creativity. Katy, Rihanna, and all the lil Pop singers who release song after song after song could never! And their songs will be forgotten 5 years from Now like all trends. (especially Rihanna. At least Katy as some songs that can be taken seriously)
Yet, was every Jackson song a classic or was it that his larger than life persona and brilliant videos made his music seem incomparable?

to answer that question, yes. What a desperate bitch. it’s pathetic and truly laughable.
@Sunshine, you are right but at the same time those billboard rules are such a fucking joke. I can’t believe that music has come to this. Whether or not she breaks MJ record she CANNOT and will not compare to him. What a fucking joke.
If this song had been the original release then she would have been taken more seriously but the fact that she’s released 3 different versions now for the same song in order to get the #1 spot is just… ugh.
I don’t blame her to try, I mean, who wouldn’t like to break MJ’s records? That looks great on the resumè you know? But no matter how many #1s she gets, still she will NEVER be able to achieve MJ’s status. She’s just another pop singer who happens to sell really well, right Rihanna?
Oh, and I agree what others have said: slashing the singles’ prices has been done by most artists/singers/musicians out there, legitimate or not doesn’t matter. They just do it.
are we forgetting the price slashes, discounts and remixes mariah did to to get #1′s?
No matter how many versions she puts out i like them all
@TheMan4U WHY do you bring Mariah into EVERY post? Trent used DC at ONE example. Did you expect him to name EVERY SINGLE ARTIST that did it? You are sooooooooo pressed it’s sickening.
BY THE WAY, NONE of Mariah’s #1s came from price slashes. Loverboy had a price slash but that peaked at #2. DONT try to lie because I have my receipts you hating piece of SHIT!
the Destiny’s Child comment was a fail since they never released remixes during the Survivor era to make their songs hits, they’re songs were already hits…the “Survivor” remix featuring Da Brat didn’t do anything to increase the song’s successful…and none of the dance remixes did anything either…ALL pop acts release dance remixes of their singles
If this doesn’t work Katy’s gonna release the “Russell broke my heart” remix. Just give it up.
@brunswickboy86 you forgot about the Bootylicious remix with Missy
Mariah never did a remix for the sake of getting to number 1. Mariah’s remixes were an artistic decision not a strategic decision.
yes MeMe! word up.
Fuck outta her. this is 2012 not the mariah slayage era. Mariah didn’t need no damn remix to help her go #1! up untill today she doesn’t seem desperate at all.
Mariah was not despearate for hits like certain artists or so called artists. Theres nothing wrong with a price cut here and there. But a price cut along with 3 different versions of 1 song really?
people in glass houses…..
what was the point of bringing up bey and Destiny child, why couldnt the article stay about Katy and her desperate attempt at another #1 instead of throwing shade at another artist especially when your fav has done the same.
Other artists have used gimmicks in the past, but I have never seen anything as bad as this. Billboard didn’t just allow katy perry to do it; they were cheering for it. It’s like her team is paying them. What the hell?!
its a sad attempt, but this version is actually better than the original and remix. they should have taken their time with the remix, its a good song but it won’t go to number one, sorry about it haha
She’s just doing what Mariah was known for so Trent you should have used your idol as an example. Both pathetic gimmicks to get to #1
Haha, haters actually think Mariah needed price slashes and gimmicks to get to the #1 spot. LMAO! Just because Katy and Rihanna are currently exemplifying it, doesn’t mean Mariah did. She earned those #1′s with her talent as a singer/songwriter. That’s an excellence of grace and hard work paying off with devotion and dedication from her fans. Not greed and desperation…come on! POW!
