Did you know that today (November 14th) is the 17th anniversary of the ‘Waiting to Exhale: Original Soundtrack’ album?
The ‘Waiting to Exhale’ soundtrack was released on November 14th 1995. Entirely written by Babyface, the record entailed songs performed by Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Brandy, Chante Moore, Mary. J. Blige, Patti LaBelle and Faith Evans.
Similar to the film, the ‘Waiting to Exhale’ soundtrack was a major commercial and critical success. Two of the singles from the set – Braxton’s ‘Let it Flow’ and Houston’s ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’ – topped the Billboard Hot 100 and propelled it to 7x platinum status in the US. Additionally, the album was ranked as the 4th most successful album on the Billboard 200 in 1996.
Material from ‘Waiting to Exhale’ soundtrack also scored 11 separate nominations at the 1997 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. However, the only win came in the Best R&B Song field for Houston’s ‘Exhale’. Watch the video for that tune below:

Yay! I love this soundtrack. Not Gon’ Cry, Exhale, Let It Flow, It Hurts Like Hell are just perfect! This is the ultimate DIVA album. I love Whitney’s performance of It Hurts Like Hell at the MTV movie awards!
^^ Whitney performed “Why Does It Hurt So Bad,” not “It Hurts Like Hell” which was performed by Aretha. Both songs were amazing though!
My bad! I love Whitney’s version of It Hurts Like Hell in 1999 too though!
one of the best soundtracks ever (alongside Sister act 2, the bodyguard)

I love this soundtrack, Let it Flow by Toni, Wey U by Chante, Not Gon Cry by Mary, All Night Long by SWV are my favorites… It’s incredible that babyface wrote it and produced all the songs, and they are really good he is really talented.
I miss this 90s sound.
Love it
How the music industry has become crap is still unbelievable
Was this the 4th best seller in 1996?
Guys in 1996!!! That means probably Mariah´s “Daydream”, Alanis “Jagged little pill” and Celine Dion´s “Falling into you” are in the top 5 with this soundtrack. Legendary. I mean can´t u see the difference between the greatness of commercial music 15 years ago… and the mediocrity of most commercial music nowadays? It´s so sad
Thanks for posting this Trent.
Favorite soundtrack. I grew up on this soundtrack. When I was ten I loved Brandy’s ‘Sitting up in my Room’ Than it was Whitnmey’s Exhale….and the way Arehta KILLED Hurts like Hell is epic.
