Beyonce and Andre 3000′s version of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” received mixed reviews from non-sponsored critics across the board but there are other artists with the musical insight to salvage The Great Gatsby soundtrack. Among those acts Emeli Sande, who record a cover Beyonce’s own “Crazy in Love”.
Rather than relying on drastically edited vocals or forced sex appeal, Sande and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra revamped “Crazy in Love” to reflect the Jazz and Swing productions in The Great Gatsby film. However, horns and drums substitute for Beyonce’s layered background vocals as Sande emulates the diva’s staccato lines in the song’s verses.
Listen to Sande’s take on “Crazy in Love” below:
Sande doesn’t have Beyonce’s power but her version of “Crazy in Love” will work perfectly for The Great Gatsby. She set the music in the context of the 1920s era and didn’t try to make a statement with the song. If only Andre 3000 and Beyonce got that memo before they recorded “Back to Black”, it would have saved them both from dealing with widespread backlash.
