Linda Perry: “Katy Perry Is Part Of The Reason Why The Music Business Is In Turmoil”

Written by Trent | Filed under Katy Perry

Linda Perry shares a last name with Katy Perry but she is definitely not cut from the same cloth. Following Katy’s record-breaking achievement of scoring 5 consecutive #1 singles from a single album, Linda has slammed the Pop singer by saying that she is “part of the reason why the music business in turmoil”.

See the songwriter’s interview with Heath Daniels below where Linda, who was the mastermind behind Christina Aguilera’s ‘Stripped’ LP, lauded Adele’s ’21′ and referred to Katy’s ‘Teenage Dream’ as “sh*t”:

I have mixed feelings regarding Linda’s comments. While it is evident that Katy’s music is far from groundbreaking and that she simply copied the work done by Cyndi Lauper, Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, her music is not complete “crap”.

Surely, ‘Firework’, ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Circle The Drain’ are all solid Pop records that were written to suit her audience. In fact, Katy never claimed to be the second coming of Barbra Streisand; she is simply trying to satisfy a market that would otherwise reject her if she made music with greater depth.

Still, with the Billboard Hot 100 currently categorised by Dance/Pop redundancies and artists attaching themselves to the latest trends in their desperate attempts to score a hit on iTunes, Katy has done little to set herself apart from the pack. Indeed, she is just the best of the worst; a definitive figure in a twisted world where Rihanna sets the bar.

    Thoughts?

What an asshole she is. Katy Perry is simply giving her audience what they ask for. Like you said she never claimed to be the greatest. She makes hits. Music isn’t what is used to be. People need to stop shitting on these artist and take it up with the fans/stans that are putting them there. Shes doing her JOB.

Although Linda Perry was pretty critical and blunt, I agree 100%. Katy and her label know exactly what to do to score hits and gain money while feeding the younger, faux-pop generation a shallow variety of songs. Sure the music is catchy and auto-tune is makes her sound good, but she has never expressed any level of artistry that separates her from the bottom of the industry spectrum.

Even tho I think she was a bit harsh and shouldnt have just singled out Katy Perry I kind of agree with what she is saying. The music industry today is about making easy pop hits that like she says have zero substance and lyrics that suck! It seems like any damn songs these days can get to number one! But thats the way the industry is and i dont think its going to change for a while! More power to Katy, cause she sure is wrapping up them number one hits!

@Americanboi that’s what she was saying. Perhaps she wasn’t as polite, but she said the same thing you are. Katy is good at what she does…but what she does just isn’t very good.

But she is absolutely correct. With the exception of Adele’s 21, the trend in music is to support your quick little catchy tune that no one will remember in a year (otherwise, Rihanna would have no career) and let real music fall by the wayside (perhaps most notably Beyonce’s 4). But this does not mean that Katy Perry is not an awesome singer/songwriter. She gives her audience what they want and she does it well.

Linda was maybe a little TOO blunt BUT I have to say I agree. Artists like Katy and Rihanna are only worried about solidifying a number 1 hit and are not making actual worth while albums. With 6 #1′s back in the 90′s, the album would have surely sold around 1 million for EACH number 1. In today’s music it’s not about the quality but quantity.

All music isn’t meant to be “legendary” or “iconic”. Some artist just want to make fun music for youngsters. That’s what Katy Perry and Rihanna do. My point is WHO’s fault is it that pop music is what’s hot right now? Slamming the artist for basically doing ther job is not cool to me. I agree with her I just don’t like the way she said it and how she went about making her point.

Clearly, some of you all didn’t listen to the full vid. She said, “That’s what she wants to do obviously”, “not saying Katy is bad, she’s great for WHAT SHE DOES.” It’s like y’all are making points that Linda already made in the video. I completely agree with Linda.

I can’t with people feeling the need to insult today’s music, when THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. most people illegally download music.

I’m the only person in my family of 7 who still buys CDS. That’s sad.

Linda Perry worked with Christina Aguilera, the girl who sang “Dirrty.” With 2 Rs. I’m done (Chris Brown voice)

FUCKIN DEADDDDDDDDDDD @ the GIF….Katy Perry makes cute records nothin groundbreaking about them. Definitely Top40 radio-friendly material. She keeps doin that & mainstream media will continue to praise/adore her “artistry”. It just really sickens me that her music is bein mentioned in the same convo wit MJ’s lol. I still think today’s artist stats/records should come wit an asterisk

      @AnnieGirl100
Linda Perry had nothing to do with “Dirrty.” She wrote other songs on “Stripped” (as well as “Back to Basics”) that actually had meaning, including “Beautiful” which just so happens to be Christina’s signature song. “Dirrty” is obsolelte.

@anniegirl100 Goodpoint but unless Linda worked on that record in particular she shouldnt be scolded wit Christina’s album song choices lol. Plus folks are buyin singles but not necessarily the album. It takes a real put together & solid album like say “21″ to reach different demographics musically & slay @ da same time. Im here for artists makin whateva kind of music they want. They dont buy themselves the public do. So if folks want to shell their coins to Perry or singles artist music then its their choice. The problem lies in music journalists who love crowning folks as Queens & Kings of this & that while havin shallow standards when it comes to accurately critiquing music.

Sorry, but what does it mean that Christina Aguilera did “Dirrty” with “two R’s?”

Dirrty was on Stripped, one of the best albums of the decade, so let’s just skip your BS commentary. Linda Perry spoke 100% truth, you know it’s true.

I watched the above video. Linda is 100% wrong in her assertion that Katy or any other artist of mild creativity and high sales is the “problem” with the music industry. It is true that Katy is not “deep”, but the truth is that every era of US pop music is dominated by some Young Thing Who Is Not Deep. Katy is that person now. The problem with the music industry is now, and has always been, that it has successfully convinced the US, then much of the world, that music should be a commodity, that an musician is only as good as his or her sales, that music (and art in general) should only be done by “professionals” who occasionally make stops Near To Where You Live, For Money, Perfectly, instead of by you, your family, and your friends, for love (even when that means for free), with respect for the music and the audience, even if that means Not Being Perfect.

Ive been saying this since about 2005! The music industry is just not the same, it has been poluted with individuals who cant sing and need antics and tricks to disguise their non talent! Its Hypersexualized and full of SHIT! Yet thats what many consumers want, so thats whats selling! Creations like Rihanna shouldnt be the standard but she is because people listen to her music! I dont even buy music, nor do I download it. Popular music right is not worth my money.

Every fucking time I come on here and he talks about other female singers he always has to throw Mariah into the mix when she has nothing to do with it in the 1st place. Its like Perez Hilton with Lady Gaga. We get it Trent Mariah is amazing but stop bashing other singers (Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, Ect) when those bitches pay no mind to that cow.
