Toni Braxton’s ‘Another Sad Love Song’ is this week’s Way Back Wednesday selection. Released as the lead single from her self-titled debut album in 1993, the song peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the contralto her first Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Watch Braxton perform the song at the 1994 AMA with her sisters singing backup below:
Braxton undoubtedly has one of the most distinct and instantly recognisable voices in the industry but it is obvious why her success remains rooted in the 1990s – her material is dated. In addition to her personal and professional troubles, Braxton’s songs are easily remembered for being major hits within certain periods but didn’t transition beyond those eras.
Regardless, there is no denying Braxton’s unbelievable talent. Many singers struggle to create their own niche but she has always been and will remain one of a kind.

You are Throwing shade Trent…her songs didn’t transition beyond those eras???UNBREAK MY HEART is of those timeless songs..and Toni Has always stayed true to her sound..
@fredrick I don’t think he was throwing shade because it’s true. This songs SCREAMS 1993. She has a few timeless songs but most of them are dated
Her debut album will never be dated… Same goes for a lot of great R&B albums that dominated the 90s. Quality music is hard to come by these days…
“DATED” am besides myself with laughter. If this came of an individual who understand what music is, then id think something of this update. Her music is not only reminiscent of what music was but what it should be, little to no artist these days can fathom even the smallest aspect of what that could be and it truly is sad. Her music is not only timeless but honorary, distinctive to the essence of true RnB/Soul. Her Legend is something that will never dated to the influence and listener’s of real music.
@simba, i wonder which albums or songs u’ve heard from this women. Also i bet ur music reference stretchs onto nothing!
