Christina Aguilera Honors Etta James At Funeral

Etta James’ passing shocked artists across the industry but of all the acts on whom she had an impact, Christina Aguilera was probably the most shaken. As such, the singer, who noted James as one of her biggest influences since childhood, was given the opportunity to honor the R0ck & Roll legend at her funeral.
Earning a standing ovation from the congregation of mourners, Aguilera belted ‘At Last’ in tribute to James. She then hurried off the stage after thanking James for the inspiration as Minister Al Sharpton encouraged the crowd to give her another round of applause.

Someone tell Christina Aguilera singing with soul is NOT contrived. She does way too much vocally live and it RUINS the intent of the songs she sings. Why people refer to her as “The Voice of Our Generation” .. I just dont know. Thats a major title bestowed upon a voice with lackluster technique.

Listen to Etta’s soulful and simplistic interpretation of this classic and then listen to this. Its clear Christina tries too hard. When I closed my eyes to listen it was actually quite unpleasant. The highlight of the performance was her gratuitous cleavage; at a funeral no doubt. No Thanks. Rest In Peace Etta James!
I personally dont see the hype in her vocal ability. She has so many technique issues its laughable. She has nice tone, but even that is overshadowed by her attempt to riff & run on every syllable. Wasnt she supposed to be in vocal training on this extended hiatus from the industry? I guess not.

Shola I agree 100%.. As usual she attempted to show off and destroyed the meaning of the song. It always becomes a “look what runs I can do” display with Christina and on top of that their never executed flawlessly. Im a fan of an effortless voice; she has decent tone but thats where it stops.
I like Christina but she did way too much. she could have started out soft and build it up but she was running and belting in the first verse (but that’s her style). All these BITCHES in the comments comming for Xtina’s technique or whatever can have a seat, YOU may not have liked her INTERPRETATION of the song but Etta had said when she was allive that it was her favourite cover version of it by anyone and Christina did her idol proud, So what if she wasn’t 100% her latest performances (E.G “Have yourself a merry little Christmas”) have proved her voice is much improved but she was emotional singing at her idols funeral so give a girl a break ffs, you were all quick to sympathise with Mariah at MJ’s funeral.

I love Christina Aguilera’s voice; she has a beautiful tone. However, her singing technique needs some work; she is always oversinging. I could barely hear the melody of the song. Instead of letting her voice become one with the music she let her voice over power it. When will she learn that, less is sometimes more? SN: All those runs were not needed for this song.

Now thats what you call a stirring rendition of that song. Yes she yelled and shouted but it was most definitely vocally amazing when you look beyond that.. I bet you Etta gave that a standing ovation as well as she still wonders why that other woman was allowed to sing her song to the new president. It had the soul that Etta has in all of her music.

Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of Xtina’s voice. I loved her 1st and 2nd albums, but live she’s a MESS. She often over sings and does to many botched runs. This was NOT excellent or even….good. It was horrible.

Amazing. Yes Christina uses a horrible technique when singing but you can’t deny her raw talent.
No one is denying her raw talent, however, raw talent can only get you so far. At some point you have to learn to develop that raw talent, otherwise will having that raw talent even matter anymore. Her horrible technique and “over-singing” makes her quite unpleasant to listen to most times, which is what matters in the end. Plus, she’s damaging her voice!
So no one is gonna comment on the fact that her period was ROLLLLLLINNNNNGGGGG down her leg while she singing this. So gross..

It was nice for her to sing at Etta’s funeral. But she had time to rehearse her vocals a little. She could’ve made this perfect if she would subtract the grunt from 2000, over runs, and out of tone vocals. I’m sorry she lost her spot in the Top 5 vocalist of Our Generation.
