Adele’s ’21′ was certified quadruple platinum in the US earlier this month and after exhibiting a consistent performance since that time, it was only a matter of time before the record’s retail sales matched its shipments. Indeed, after only 34 weeks on the BIllboard 200, ’21′ has now sold over 4 million copies.
’21′ sold another 111K units this week for a grand total of 4.01 million copies. The LP has been available in the US since February 22nd and was the first album by a UK act to spend 12 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 since George Michael’s ‘Faith’ in 1988. Furthermore, with 34 weeks in the top 5, Adele’s ’21′ extended its record of being the longest running top 5 album on the lineup since 1991 after it snatched the title from Whitney Houston’s ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack.
Moreover, on the Billboard Hot 100, Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ has been crowned at #1 for a 4th week. The song experience a surge in airplay with a 6% increase to 144 million audience impressions and sold another 207K downloads.
However, Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’, which ranked at #6, depicted the largest increases in digital sales and airplay this week with 174K downloads sold (up 21%) and 58 million audience impressions (up 31%). The song is expected to vault further up the chart next week following the release of its accompanying video.
