Did you know that the Eagles’ ‘Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975′ was the first album certified platinum by the RIAA?
The highest certification awarded by the RIAA prior to 1976 was gold for shipments of 500K units. When the company introduced the platinum level (1 million units shipped) for albums released after January 1st of that year, the first to reach that status was the Eagles’ ‘Their Greatest Hits’. The record was certified platinum on February 24th 1976.
Multiplatinum certifications were later granted in 1984 and diamond awards (10 million units shipped) followed in 1999. To date, Eagles’ ‘Their Greatest Hits’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller‘ have shipped more copies than any other albums in the US. Both releases have been certified 29x platinum.
