When Ashanti’s BraveHeart album was postponed for the umpteenth time until June 4th, her fans began to wonder if the record would ever be released. Well, to give them just a flicker of hope, the singer has released a new song called “Never Should Have”, which serves as her latest official single.
Thus far, none of Ashanti’s singles from BraveHeart have charted on the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, her last song from any album to crack the chart was “The Way That I Love You” from The Declaration in 2008. Will “Never Should Have” return her to prominence? Listen to it below
“Never Should Have” is certainly the most Top 40/Mainstream radio-friendly song that Ashanti has put forward since “Only U”. Yet, despite her impressive vocal performance, there is an edge missing from the track and it sounds as though it was rejected from Melanie Amaro’s ill-fated recording sessions.
No matter how hard Ashanti tries with her new material, she just can’t find her footing. Still, she deserves props for trying something different with “Never Should Have”. Perhaps the title of the song relates to her decision to launch her own record label instead of securing a comeback first.
