Flashback: Beyonce Discusses Stealing People’s Work

Beyonce has been embroiled in a tumultuous scandal involving allegations that she stole several scenes of her ‘Countdown’ video from choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ and ‘Achterland’ works. In fact, the singer was even forced to release a statement where she openly denied any theft and claimed that she was simply “inspired”.
However, Beyonce’s own words have come back to haunt her as clip from 2006 that features the entertainer discussing her controversial actions has now surfaced. Watch the video below where Beyonce joked about rarely being invited to Broadway shows because people knew that she would “steal everything”:
Unfortunately, Beyonce did not pay Keersmaeker the courtesy of an introduction before “paying tribute” to her work.

From a non-stan point of view, I feel as if this was simply a joke. I can’t consider what Beyonce does in videos as stealing because she either says where she got the concepts from or when asked she answers about how she got the inspiration. I just dont see the big fuss about it. If she was really as bad as bloggers like you make her seem then she wouldnt be so respected by industry greats and others. Just my two cents

I remember back in 07 she use to say that, she wrote irreplaceable, on live TV. Then, like a week or so later she started to give credit to Ne-Yo at awards shows by thanking him for writing the song. She never gives credit to people unless she in called out on it. Why can’t she be original for once??? But Mariah has been noted by EVERYONE she works with that she writes her own songs. It’s common knowledge, plus Mariah said that she would rather not sing a song that she didn’t write (covers excluded).
Beyonce has had an apparent history of doing this since the “Survivor” era with “Bootylicious” and with every era since. From lyrics to production to videos, her credibility as a “creator” has dwindled. What makes it so disappointing is that from her own words she makes herself seem like such an “artist”, but the facts come out and it proves that she isn’t.
Bottom line: I do think she is involved in creative aspects to her career, but I don’t think it’s to the level that she (and her annoying stans) makes everyone believe. Period.

I believe it was an appearance on TRL that she said that she wrote it. A week after that, Ne-Yo made his statement.
Additionally, the first release of “BDay” has her as a primary writer of the song, pretty much stating that she had the most input on the track. On the re-release, her credit is moved after Ne-Yo’s.

The only thing Beyonce had to pay out for “Kissing You” she was asked Not to make a video of the song but she did anyway she had to pay also she had to remove it from the B’day Deluxe Album. Anything else she’s NEVER went to court for. Mariah Carey was the one paying out. She’s been sued by writer’s Back up singers etc. I’m a big fan of the 90′s her and Madonna were getting sued left and right. @T: However, it is a problem when she does not ask the original artist for permission to use the work that “inspired” her. And she only “gives credit” when she is called out or questioned by others. It’s a problem when the entire sequence and choreo of a video is almost exactly like the original. It’s unfair to the original artist because then she is simply “stealing” the work of another. It’s like covering a song or sampling, artists cannot simply cover another artists song/use parts of their song, they need to ask the original artist for permission and obtain the rights to do so.
