Kelly Clarkson Soars With Super Bowl Anthem Performance

Kelly Clarkson started her career on the first season of ‘American Idol’ so it was fitting that she was selected to perform the US national anthem, ‘Star Spangled Banner’, at this evening’s Super Bowl XLVI. However, unlike many of her warbling predecessors, the singer kept her voice in check and delivered a subtle yet moving performance of the tune.
Watch Clarkson, whose ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ single has climbed to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, perform at the Super Bowl below:
Clarkson was fantastic and clearly understood the most simple rule about performing the US anthem – just sing the song! Indeed, instead of including a string of pointless runs and high notes, she focused on the meaning of the tune.
If only Christina Aguilera would have done the same when she performed at the Super Bowl last year. Sadly, she tried to match Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey but failed horribly.

Mariah’s rendition was technically sung the best. It was sung the way the original was written. She has nothing to do with this. Haters stay on their job.
That was a pretty elegant version of the US anthem Kelly. This has been a year where Kelly has been winning everywhere she goes

@ theman….honey, sit down. Mariah’s version was full of the same choppy phrasing and annoying register switching that she always does. Her rendition is not memorable at all. Mariah’s singing is very schizophrenic.

Funny thing is I never knew Mariah sang the anthem that alone says a lot the anthem is and will always be Whitney’s I realize that if any singers does something great you somehow credit Mariah lately it seems like you have become like the very fan Stans of others celebs that you critize.
Kelly did good but nothing earthshattering or that will remove Whitney’s place as the standard. Mariah should not even be mentioned because she is never listed even in the top 5. That’s Trent stanhood talking. Whitney lipped but sang along to the pre recorded version. Watch her veins bulging and her sweating. She also performed it live in front of the troops during her charity Welcome Home Heroes concert on tv.
