Alicia Keys Admits Vocal Struggles With ‘Girl On Fire’

Alicia Keys performs ‘Girl on Fire’ for The New York Times.

When Alicia Keys released her new song, ‘Girl on Fire’, it was obvious that she have overstepped the boundaries of her vocal range, especially when she performed the song live at the 2012 MTV VMA and almost ruptured a lung. Well, the singer has come forward to admit that definitely pushed herself too far.

Speaking to The New York Times about the development of ‘Girl on Fire’, Keys joked that it while recording the song, which she wrote herself, she wondered why she wrote it in such a high key. “What I’m gonna ask myself is why I wrote this song so high because I didn’t even get to the chorus yet, and I’m asking myself what made me write this song so high.”

Unfortunately, the ‘Girl on Fire’ producers, Jeff Bhasker and Salaam Remi, didn’t affirm the inner voice that was trying to warn Keys about the eventual disaster and now we have to deal with the repeated choruses of yelled high notes. Watch Keys talk about ‘Girl on Fire’ below:

“Don’t go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to…”

    Thanks Alicia Keys Media!

All she has to do is tone it down some, Alicia has a beautiful voice. She just tries to do things vocally that she doesn’t have to.

You can all believe this blog all you want, but Trent is being MESSY! If you look at the video, she is simply talking about the creation of the song and how it all came about. The only truth of this blog is that she did state she wrote some of the vocals in high key before the chorus. I read this blog thinking that Alicia Keys was losing her voice from singing this song! Wrong! I don’t know why Trent is trying to paint bad pictures of good artist, but you will never being famous being such a bitter old blogger.

There’s no shade to be had here. There are a bunch of artists who’ll take the harmony parts of their songs live. It annoys me but the difference between Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys is that Keys wrote the song. She just needs to add a bit of rasp live to soften the blow of those notes. Make it sound harsh and get the audience engages in what she’s saying.

Everytime I hear Girl on Fire, I think of the Hunger Games, though.
