Did you know that Tommy Edwards was the first African-American solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100?
Edwards’ ‘It’s All in the Game’ landed at #1 on the Hot 100 during the week of September 29th 1958 – just 8 weeks after the launch of the chart on August 4th. The song held the top spot of the lineup for six consecutive weeks and was the longest-running song on the lineup in that year.
Interestingly, ‘All in the Game’ held the record as the longest-running Hot 100 chart-topper until Percy Faith’s ‘Theme from A Summer Place’ clocked nine weeks at the summit in 1960. Unfortunately, Edwards never scored another top 10 hit single and died in 1969 at the age of 47 years.
